Dear readers of Korean through lyrics,

How are you? I hope your Korean studies are going well. I have to say due to a lack of new songs from FT Island, I don’t even know what songs to write about. 🙂 However I do still watch Korean dramas so it’s good to translate from Korean drama OST songs to get to know a few more Korean pop singers. Today, I am going to do a lesson on the song “Superstar” from the Korean drama series “Mary staying out all night.” For those of you who are fans of Jang Guen Suk probably have watched this. It’s a relatively simple song so it should be easy to learn. 🙂

Introduction (Sorry, I was not allowed to embed the video here):

Video of the song:

(oh my heart is always trembling)

내일도 와우와우 와
(Tomorrow also wow wow wow)

매일매일 담을 내일 기억들과
(Everyday the story comes back the next day)

너와 내가 가득 준비한 행복

To chorus

Verse 2:
너를 보면 가슴이 두근두근
(When I look at you my heart is pounding)

빨리달리네

오 널 보면 자꾸자꾸만 떨려오네
(oh, if I look at you, I am always trembling)

(What should I do? Wow wow wow)

Grammar Points:
This song doesn’t have complicated grammar so let’s learn how to make adjective from a noun.

For present tense:

For action verbs and descriptive verbs that ends with 있다 or 없다, add 는 to the verb stem.

Eg. 읽다 – to read , 책 – book
The booking that I am reading – 읽는책

Eg. 재미 있다- to be interesting
The booking that is interesting – 재미있는책

For descriptive verb, add ㄴ to verbs without the final consonant or 은 to verbs with a final consonant
Eg. 예쁘다 – pretty , 여자- girl
A pretty girl 예쁜여자
Eg. 좋다 – good, 날씨 – weather
Good weather – 좋은 날씨

That should be enough for your to be able to describe something now. Try to make up some sentences and post as comments! Why don’t we use some words to describe Jang Geun Suk? I will start:
멋진 남자! 🙂

Dear Korean Learners,

Since I know almost all of my readers here are really into learning Korean, I decided to write this post to share some of the resources I use to learn Korean.  And the best of all, they are all free.  Yes, you can learn Korean online for free!  It’s that amazing?  As much as you and I enjoy learning from Korean songs, it will be good to have formal lessons and other ways to get the language as well.  The more ways you use to learn Korean, the faster you can learn it.  So try all of them and see which one works for you.

1. The one I use a lot is Koreanclass101.com.  Here they have podcast of classes that ranges from beginning level to advanced level.   They have video lessons as well so if you have your ipod, you can actually see the video.  However, the videos are mainly for beginning lessons.  You can even subscribe to get a free Korean word a day.  They also have a basic and premium subscription so you can follow along with the class but those you need to subscribe for a fee.

2. Loecsen.com – It gives you 200 expressions in Korean.  It’s good if you need a crash course quickly.

3. TalkToMeInKorean.com –Started by one of the guys from Koreanclass101, it also has a lot of free Korean lessons.

4. Sogang University Program– Offers complete lessons with a focus to improve your spoken Korean.

5. Visit Korea – That’s the official tourism site for Korea but it also teaches you Korean.  It also has information on language programs in Korea.  So for those who really want immersion, this is where you can find out where to study in Korea.  I actually really enjoy the Korean language adventure with the animation.

6. Online Intermediate College Korean – This is more for intermediate Korean learners and it has complete lessons with audio, homework and exercise.  I find them very helpful and I often refer to this site when I write my blog to reference grammar points.

7. Korean Study Room – This site has a lot of useful sentences.  But it’s not really complete lessons and you have to know how to read Hangul.

I believe these are the best resources to get you started and going.  There are other resources that I will share with you all later.

Do you have a resource that you like and want to share with us?  Please comment and let us know about it.

Grammar Point:

verb stem + (을)ㄹ 테니까

When you use this form, it indicates the reason or cause of the speaker’s plan or intention.  You might compare this to (으)니까 as it means “since, because” and conveys the reason or explanation of doing something.  The difference is mainly in the level of confidence.  Here, 테니까 is more like probably where as 니까 is almost sure.

Example from the song:

굳은 살이 박힌 내 가슴 어디에도
또 다른 사랑은 못 쓸테니까

My heart is stuck with all the calluses that nowhere is my heart is able to love again.

More examples:

1. 가:배 고파요!  먹을 게 있어요?

나: 지금은 요리 할테이까 잠깐만 기다리세요.

2. 가: 오늘 저녁 9시쯤 전화할 테니까 꼭 받으세요.

나: 저는 그 시간에 자는데요.

I hope you guys learned some Korean today and enjoyed this song.  Please make some new sentences with this grammar point and post it as comments.

Dear fellow Korean language learners,

How’s your Korean learning going? I am sure a lot of you have been waiting for this next lesson since it’s about one of the top songs in Korea now. Yeah, I mean the top song! If you have read my last post, FT Island’s “Love Love Love” just got the #1 spot on Inkigayo in Korea. So I am sure you know this lesson is about “사랑 사랑 사랑.”

So who should be introducing this song? I don’t know. Let’s find out! 😛

Since most of you have probably since the MV from my other post so let’s now watch a live performance by FT Island:

Seung Hyun:
빗물이 온몸에 적신다
(Raindrops wet my whole body.)

또 애써 고갤들어하늘을 바라본다
( I tried hard again to lift up my head and look at the sky)

내눈에 들어간 비가 너만을 생각하며
(The rain goes into my eyes as I think of you)

(And it cultivates and replaces the tears that I retrained and restrained again)

Bridge by Hong Ki:

사랑한 추억을 내게 준 너를 보낸다
(The loving memory that you gave me, I sent you away(with them))

Chorus:

(Goodbye my love love love)

잘가요 내 사랑사랑사랑
(Go well my love love love)

(Now goodbye goodbye goodbye)

(Leave me and please be happy)

한걸음 한걸음 니가 멀어진다
(Step by step you become further away)

Rap by Seung Hyun:
말없이 술잔을 채운다
(I fill the wine glass silently)

힘겹게 손에들며 한숨을 뱉어본다
(While I picked it up with my hands with difficulty, I spit out a sigh)

한잔을 마셔본다 너를 생각하며
(I drank one cup while I think of you)

참고 또 참아왔던 눈물도 함께 삼킨다
(And I swallow the tears that I retrained and restrained again)

Repeat Bridge and Chorus

Hong Ki:
난 가슴이 차가워 사랑을 몰랐는데
(My heart is freezing. I didn’t know love.)

정말 고마워 이제야 알았어
(Thank you very much. Now I know)

이런게 사랑이란걸
(what this thing called love is)

심장이 멈춘다 가슴이 멎는다 니가 떠난다
(My heart stops, my heart stops, you leave me)

Repeat Chorus

Seung hyun:
빗물이 온몸을 적신다
(Raindrops wet my whole body.)

하늘을 바라본다
(I look at the sky)

Hong Ki:
차오르는 나의 눈물이 온몸을 적셔도
(The tears what bubbled up wet my whole body)

이제는 good bye good bye good bye

한걸을 한걸음 니가 멀어진다
(Step by step you become further away)

바라본다 – look (at), watch, stare(at)
들어간 – to go in
키운다 – raise, bring up, grow, cultivate
너무나 – so
추억 – memory
차오르 – bubble up
부디 – please
한걸음 – one step
술잔 – wine glass
채운다 – fill in / fill up
힘겹게 – with difficulty (adj.)
한숨 – a sigh, break, rest
뱉어본다 – spit out, expectorate
삼킨다 – swallow
차가워 – cold, chilly, freezing

Grammar point:
adjective verb stem + 아/어/해 지다

When an adjective verb steam is attached with “아/어/해 지다”, it means a state is changed from one to another. It can be translated as “becoming” or “turning.”

Example from lyrics:
한걸을 한걸음 니가 멀어진다
(Step by step you become further away)

In here, 멀다 means far and with the addition of 어+지다 means becoming further.

The grammar of verb + ㄴ/는 다 is a plain form which usually used for stating a neutral statement on fact. It’s almost like thinking out loud for oneself. It’s the speaker’s observation or thought at present.

Other Examples:
1. 그가수 인기가 떨어졌다
That singer lost his popularity.

2. 겨울이 다가오니까 점점 해가 짧아지네요.
As winter is approaching, slowly the daylight is getting shorter.

I hope you all enjoyed the song “Love love love” in this lesson and it helps you in your Korean learning. Please try to make sentence with these new vocabularies and new grammar point.

As always, please comment and share your thoughts about this lesson. 🙂

Hi all,

I am sure a lot of hallyu fans like me knows about Park Yong Ha. He is definitely one of the first hallyu stars who started the Korean wave. To me, it started when I first watched “Winter Sonata.” It was very well made with lots of twists and turns. He acted very well as Sang-Hyuk and I also watched his more recent drama “On Air.” I like that drama too. When I heard the he committed suicide, I was so shocked. Needless to say, I don’t feel good at all.

I know that Park sings as well and is very famous in Japan. I want to have my own tribute to him and translate one of his songs. I have to admit I don’t listen to him very much but I do know he sings in some drama OSTs. So I started looking them up and eventually I found one song that I know. It’s the OST song of “All In” which I watched. The song is called “처음 그 날처럼” meaning “just like the first day.”

Let’s see Park Yong Ha singing it live once more:

Lyrics:

Verse 1:
가야한다고 어쩔 수 없다고
(You said you had to leave. You said you had no choice)

너의 손 잡은채 나는 울고만 있었지
(While I hold your hand, I was only crying)

언젠가는 꼭 돌아올거라고
(Someday you said you would surely come back)

그땐 우린 서로 웃을 수 있을거라고
(Then you said we will be able to laugh at each other)

Chorus:
긴 기다림은 내겐 사랑을 주지만
(Although the long wait gave me love)

너에겐 아픔만 남긴 것 같아
(To you, it seems to only leave you pain)

이런 날 용서해
(Forgive me this)

바보같은 날
(Silly me)

언젠가 널 다시 만날 그 날이 오면
(Someday I will meet you again. When that day comes,)

너를 내품에 안고 말할꺼야
(I will tell you in my arms)

너만이 내가 살아온 이유였다고
(You were the only reason I lived)

너없인 나도 없다고
(Without you, there is no me)

언젠가 힘든 이 길이 끝이 나는 날
(Someday when this difficult road ends)

그대 곁에서 내가 눈 감는 날
(I close my eyes next to you)

기억해 나의 사랑은 니가 마지막이였단걸
(Remembering you were my last love)

처음 그 날 처럼..
(Just like the first day)

Verse 2:
눈을 감으면 잊어져 버릴까
(If I close my eyes, will I forget you?)

슬픈 밤에도 쉽게 잠들 수 없었지
(I could not easily fall asleep on those sad nights)

꿈에서라도 널 보게 된다면
(Even in my dreams if I can see you)

눈물 흐를까봐 눈을 뜰 수가 없었어
(I fear I will have tears falling. I could not open my eyes)

Repeat Chorus

Vocabulary:

어쩔 수 없다 – It can’t be helped. You have no choice.
언젠가 – Someday
꼭 – surely, certainly, undoubtedly
서로 – each other
긴 기다림은 – long wait

Grammar point:
Action verb + ㄴ/은 채(로)
It means “just as it is”, “while doing”, “being in the state of”.
This construction indicates a state or a condition in which an action occurs.

너의 손 잡은채 나는 울고만 있었지
While I hold your hand, I was only crying

More examples:
1. 안경을 쓴 채 잤다.

Hi everyone,

It’s time to learn another song. I will try to introduce different artists to give you different flavors from time to time. Since I recently finished watching “Boys Over Flowers”(꽃보다 남자>), this time I have chosen a song from this drama’s OST called “내 머리가 나빠서.” Actually I personally don’t even know the song very well because I have tried it in norebang (Korean name for Karaoke) and I didn’t know how to sing it. But after this lesson, I believe I can do it! (^.^)

This song was sung by SS501 which is a very popular group in Korea. And 김현중 from this group acted in this drama as well. Jan Di from the series to introduce the song for us. Here she is:

Let’s hear the song:

Here is the lyrics:

내 머리는 너무나 나빠서
(Because I am stupid)

너 하나밖에는 모르고
(Outside of you, I don’t know anybody)

다른 사람을 보고있는 넌
(You who is looking at another person)

이런 내마음도 모르겠지
(You have no idea of such feelings)

너의 하루에 나란 없겠지
(Your every day I am not in it)

또 추억조차 없겠지만
(Again, in your memories you don’t find me but)

너만 바라만 보고있는 난
(I am looking only at you)

자꾸 눈물이 흐르고있어
(Tears keep falling every time)

너의 뒷모습을 보는것도 난 행복이야
(Even looking at your back is my happiness)

아직 나의 마음을 몰라도
(Yet, You still don’t know my heart)

끝내 스치듯이 가도
(In the end like a person passed by you go)

Chorus
니가 너무 보고싶은 날엔
(In those days that I really missed you)

너무 견디기 힘든 날에는
(Those days are very hard to bear and painful days)

너를 사랑한다 입가에 맴돌아
(“I love you” spins around in my mouth)

혼자 다시 또 crying for you
(Alone once again crying for you)

혼자 다시 또 missing for you
(Alone once again missing for you)

Baby I love you I’m waiting for you

난 너의 하루에는 없겠지
(In your every day, I am not there)

또 기억조차 없겠지만
(Again, in your memories I am not there but)

너만 바라만 보고있는 난
(I am looking only at you)

혼자 추억을 만들고 있어
(I am making my memories alone)

내겐 사랑이란 아름다운 상처같아
(Loving you seems like a beautiful wound)

너의 예쁜 미소를 보아도
(I still see your beautiful smile)

함께 난 웃지도 못해
(I cannot laugh with you)

니가 너무 생각나는 날엔
(The days that I think about you so much)

가슴 시리고 슬픈 날에는
(My heart is cold in these sad days)

니가 보고싶다 입가에 맴돌아
(“I miss you” spins around in my mouth)

혼자 다시 또 crying for you
(Alone once again crying for you)

혼자 다시 또 missing for you
(Alone once again missing for you)

Baby I love you I’m waiting for you

Bye bye never say good bye

이렇게 잡지 못하지만
(I can’t hold you like this but)

I need you 아무 말도 못해
(I need you I can’t even say anything)

I want you 바래도 다시 바래도
(I want you I wish again I wish)

니가 너무 보고싶은 날엔
(The days that I miss you so much)

너무 견디기 힘든 날에는
(Those days are very hard to bear and difficult days)

너를 사랑한다 입가에 맴돌아
(“I love you” spins around in my mouth)

(Alone once again crying for you)
