Hi all,

I haven’t posted a lesson in a while since I went to see FT Island. So the latest new Korean song from FT Island that I haven’t translated is probably “Lie” so I hope you will enjoy this lesson.

Let’s see who is introducing this song for us:

As I can’t get enough of Lee Hong Ki’s live performance, this is a live performance of “Lie” in FT Island’s Men’s stories concert earlier this year, I hope you will enjoy it.

Here is the song lyrics:

Lie 사랑이란 그말 다 알면서 또 다시 속는 그말
(Lie, the words you called love, while know it all, again those words deceived me.)

잊어준다는 말 보내준다는 말
(The words that says I will forget, the words that say I will send you away)

내가 할 수 없는 못된 말
(These mean words I cannot say)

아니 아니길 바랬는데 너는 아니길 바랬는데
(I hope it’s not like that. I hope it’s not you.)

그 흔한 사랑 넌 절대 아니기를 빌고 또 빌었는데
(I pray and pray again that you never were the common love.)

아니 아니길 바랬는데 너는 다르길 바랬는데
(I hope it’s not like that. I hope you were different.)

그 쉬운 사랑 넌 절대 아니기를 빌고 또 빌었는데
(I pray and pray again that you never were the easy love.)

(rap)
oh 영원히 타오를 줄 알았던 뜨거웠던 우리 사랑
(I knew it was going to blaze forever, our once warmed love)

우 리 손가락에 낀 반지 맞추며 서로의 사랑을 맹세한 사랑의 언약
(The rings we put on our fingers in matching swear the promise of our love for each other)

이제는 틀린채로 남아버린 정말 남은 우리 사랑 너란 사람
(Now just as it is wrong to hold and is completely left. Really, remain is our love, the person you are)

한 때는 인생의 전부였던 너란 사람
(During the time(I loved you) you were everything in my life, the person you are)

늘 속도 모르고 맘도 모르고 떠나간 사람
(You always don’t know what’s inside of me. You don’t know what’s in my heart. The person that left me.)

이젠 다른 사람의 사람
(Now a different person’s person)

(chorus)
lie 사랑이란 그말 다 알면서 또 다시 속는 그말
(Lie, the words you called love, while know it all, again those words deceived me.)

잊어준다는 말 보내준다는 말
(The words that says I will forget, the words that say I will send you away)

내가 할 수 없는 못된 말
(These mean words I cannot say)

lie 돌아온다는 말 나 혼자만 믿고 있는 그 말
(lie the words saying you will come back. The words that only I alone am believing.)

사랑한다는 말 거짓말이라도
(The words saying I love you even it is a lie)

이제 들을 수 없는 그 말
(I couldn’t even hear those words)

그래 이렇게 버릴거면 나를 이렇게 버릴거면
(Yes if you throw it away like that, if you throw me away like that)

처음부터 사랑한단 슬픈 말은 듣지 않았을텐데
(From the beginning, I should not have listened to your sad words about loving me)

(rap)
oh 그래 난 너만 행복하면 돼
(oh yes I am okay if you are happy)

잡았던 니 손을 이제 놔줄께
(Your hand that I used to hold now I shall let go)

널 묶어 논 내 사랑의 자물쇠 풀어줄께
(The love lock that has chained you I will set free)

니가 원하면 쿨하게 널 떠나볼께
(If you want I will try to leave you in a cool way)

처음부터 넌 내게 어울리지 않던 사람
(From the beginning you did not suit me)

그래도 널 사랑한 내 욕심히 과했다
(Also my greed for your love is excessive)

내 욕심이 만들어낸 나를 향한 벌로
(My greed has created a punishment for me)

아프지도 바라지도 않아
(It hurts and it’s not what I hope)

(chorus)
lie 이별이라는 말 널 또다시 기다리게 하는 말
(lie the words that is called goodbye. The words that I wait for you to say again.)

잊어준다는 말 보내준다는 말
(The words that says I will forget, the words that say I will send you away)

내가 할수 없는 못된 말
(These mean words I cannot say)

lie 돌아온다는 말 나 혼자만 믿고 있는 그 말
(lie the words saying you will come back. The words that only I alone am believing.)

사랑한다는 말 거짓말이라도
(The words saying I love you even it is a lie)

이제 들을 수 없는 그 말
(I couldn’t even hear those words)

Grammar Point:
verb stem + ㄴ/은/는 데

This is a confusing grammar point as it can be translated in many different ways. It really depends on the context. It can be used as a sentence ending or conjuncture and mainly used as an introduction to the next idea.

It comes from -이다 + 그런데.
– 은데 attaches to descriptive present tense verbs ending in a consonant.
– ㄴ데 attaches to descriptive present tense verbs ending in a vowel
– 는데 is attached to all other cases
– For 이다, 인데 is used.
– The past tense -았/었/였 or the future tense -겠 can be inserted between the verb and this pattern

1. Two sentences are connect in such a way that the action taking place in the first sentence still continues in the second sentence. It can be translated as “and” or “so.”
a) 제가 책을 읽는데 좀 조용히 주세요.
I am reading a book so please be quiet.

2. Two sentences are contrasted in a time concept, in meaning, or stand in a cause-effect relationship.
a) 비가 오는데, 밖에 왜 나가요?
It’s raining outside, so why do you go out?

More examples from the lyrics:
아니 아니길 바랬는데
I hope it’s not like that.

너는 아니길 바랬는데
I hope it’s not you.

그 흔한 사랑 넌 절대 아니기를 빌고 또 빌었는데
I pray and pray again that you never were the common love

Please feel free to add in your own examples in our comments section. I hope you enjoyed this lesson and will subscribe to this blog for future lesson. (^.^)

Hi all,

Sorry for not writing for so long as I was in Hong Kong attending FT Island’s concert. Of course once I got back, I could’t wait to share with all my readers here about the whole experience. But apparently I was in FT Island coma and just couldn’t finish writing this post! OMG! The guys were so cute in person!

The concert was held in Kowloon Tong on the 6th floor of an exhibition center. Fans were lining up the day before and the line was long. The following picture would give you a sense of how crazy it was.

I arrived couple hours early but according to the line, I still arrived too late. 🙂

Anyway, here is how the set up of the concert looked like.

Since it’s open seating and I was so far down the line, here was the view from my seat. Later you would find out the seat really didn’t matter.

The band started the concert with the song “F.T. Island”, of course!

Once the concert started, everyone just ran to the front of the stage and I did too! Then they said something to the fans. Let’s see what they said.

Then they sang a song that I didn’t really recognize. Can anyone of you help me?

After that they sang “Love Sick”:

The fans were totally crazy by now. Nobody was sitting down and the concert was getting out of control. The next song they sang was “Until you come back”.

By now, the concert was totally out of control and the band was called back to stage and the concert was paused. The organizer asked everybody to go back to their seats in order for the concert to continue. I have never seen any concert that has to pause to restore order. This was the headline of the newspaper the day after.

We all had to go back to our seats ’cause we wanted to continue to see FT Island! Then the band finally came back out and continued the concert. They started with their Japanese song “Raining.”

They then started doing lucky draw from the audience and 5 lucky fans would get a flower from one of the band members. A girl sitting next to me was so lucky to get picked and when she left she gave a hug to Jun hun. He was shocked! 😉

Now again, they finally greeted their fans in English saying that it’s their first time in Hong Kong. Hong Ki was speaking in English but in fact none of us could understood him at the end. 😛 Let’s see if you could. And then he went on to sing “Marry Me.”

Then they sang their recent hit “I hope”.

At the end of the concert, they sang the recent OST from Hong Ki’s drama “You’re Beautiful.” The fans were really crazy ’cause we all loved this song!

This was a very short concert that lasted for only one hour. No encore or anything. The band quickly left the venue after the concert.

On my way out of the concert, I took a picture of what’s selling at their concert.

Here the fans were leaving after the concert:

As fans were leaving, of course they didn’t miss the chance to take some photos with the banners of their favorite members. I didn’t think I could squeeze in so I didn’t try. :-p

It was really good to see FT Island performing live on stage for the first time. I had lots of pictures that didn’t work as they were moving a lot. I have only shown part of my collection. I hope it gave you all a sense of how the concert went.

Please leave me comments and let me know what you think. 🙂

I will cover my next stop in Taiwan to attending their fan stamping event soon! And for those waiting for more Korean lessons, don’t worry. They are coming. Everyone knows FT Island is officially launching their first single “Flower Rock” in Japan on May 17, right?
